three things:

1. earth Day was observed for the first time in 1970. hooray!

2. while listening to my local college radio station, on the way to work this morning, I had the following thoughts:

a. did they just actually play the indigo girls and k.d. lang back to back?

b. paula cole is making a comeback?

c. the breeders?!

So it seems that my local station became very gay friendly. I know Paula Cole does not play for the team but she sure got my attention after her Grammy Awards appearance. (Exhibit A - ) I gave up on listening to new Indigo Girls material years ago and I also gave up the idea of seeing them live. My concentration has moved onto another Atlanta, Georgia transplant.

3. by no means am I fashion-forward – my monthly intake of fashion consists of only the following: lucky magazine & nylon respectively – for the love of all things holy, why are there numerous amount of girls wearing tights as pants this spring? It wouldn’t be much of an eyesore if most of these girls wore long shirts but that hasn’t been the case.

2. I opted for watching Battlestar Galactica Season 1 & 2 rather than partaking in Superbowl mania. I found out who won around 10:38pm when my neighbors yelled out the windows. "GOOOO Giants! Hell Yeah!" Today is a parade for the Giants. Several hundred people have already gathered and some might have forgotten other priorities.

When The Rooster Crows

Ten days ago, I saw a rooster hanging out in front of a neighbor's lawn. Here are a few things you should know about the area I call home:

a) I live in suburbia-ville much like Springfield but I don't have a bartender called Moe.
b) I'm miles and miles away from a working farm.
c) Kids are not inclined to call their elders "ma'am" or "sir" unless they were brought up by polite parents.

I've been a nerd since birth so of course I had to look up my city's rules and regulations. I have yet to find anything that says you cannot own a rooster in residential areas. In other words, maybe I shouldn't have left a note on my neighbor's door.

A question was posed to me at a social gathering--details about what kind of party it was or how I’ve come to hate Larry are not important; to which I was asked why I still carried a bottle opener attached to my key chain.

I replied seriously, “I have it just in case of an emergency.”

Much like you need jumper cables in your car, I thought.

Laughter poured out each of their mouths as though Barney had burst into flames right in front of them. An additional number of people gathered around to see what the commotion was about. Perhaps they wanted to laugh at me as well. I felt as though I was Bambi trapped in front of his attackers. Small, scared and limp. Where as in this scenario, my attackers were married groups, newly divorcees, the recently brokenhearted and the in-betweens who had yet to ask their partners the ultimate question: Are we dating/are you coming over tonight/want to play Jenga?

“What kind of emergency would you possibly need a bottle opener for?” Asked a married fellow with wild curiosity.

As I started to respond, I think back to when I had considered this guy to be my Kip Wilson. Has his newborn relationship prohibited him from all things fun and most importantly why the hell is he acting like he doesn’t know why I would need a bottle opener for emergency purposes? Did we not read the same book about the pick-up artist and did we not laugh on several occasions about our failed social experiments after reading said book? I eyed him suspiciously trying to figure out if he was joking but he was serious.

“I might be in a situation where it’s needed,“ I responded coolly.

“Name one,” asked another.

“Two weeks ago, there was a party and no bartender in sight. It proved most useful then.”

I noticed the majority of the group was in a wonder about the whole thing and had now realized that I’ve become that friend. You must know what I’m referring to at this point. I became the friend who is perpetually single or in feverish relationships that lasts every new moon cycle. They all spoke of babies, rental properties and engagements. Since I shared none of those interests, to a certain extent, I talked about what I appreciated the most. Typically, they are left with nothing back to offer other than, “Didn’t they play on David Letterman?” or “Why don’t you just move (insert country name here) and help them yourself?”

A brave blonde, whom I flirted with last year when she was straight, tells the group that there’s nothing wrong with having that on a key chain. She smiled back at me while she caressed her new paramour.

I grimaced.

I then asked a new question to the group just before I was patted on the back like a puppy by Larry: “How old is too old to carry a bottler opener on one’s key chain anyway?”

Prior to their response, I thought possibly they might have some carnal knowledge that I don’t share. They might even stop talking about babies long enough for me to understand their weird language. More importantly why is this wine taking so long to take affect.

“After your junior year in college,” they all declare.

I nodded, sipped my wine and waited for a proper time to make my exit.

Dear Friends:

I haven't updated this blog in ages. You know this and I know this. I'm glad we've gotten that out of the way. There is a new podcast. It will be up soon. I promise.

BUT.

I received one of my periodicals today and it featured an interview with Sarah Shahi. She avoided talking about her personal life but when asked whether working on a show like The L Word make her question her sexuality at all, she replied, "Not really. It's funny, because we were on location, and there were times when I definitely was feeling kind of lonely [giggles] and I was like, Maybe I could... But I think that sex and the Kinsey Scale and the whole bit-it's all such a personal thing that I really don't feel like I can comment freely on that and sort of have people read what I'm saying right now and have it be fact. Because what I'm saying today could change tomorrow, especially on that sort of topic. My big thing when I was on the show was that I definitely felt I was representing a group of people who had very little representation on television. And I felt, Leave them the fuck alone. Gay, straight, who gives a fuck? [Gay couples] are no different than heterosexual couples--sometimes they even function better than heterosexual couples. That was the biggest revelation I had on The L Word. What is the big fucking deal? They're just like everyone else; leave them alone."

I remember accidentally meeting Merri Cyr, his friend and the photographer of Grace, at a small art gallery a few years ago. I couldn't help asking her something she most likely heard a million times over but she smiled quietly and answered all of my questions. Then last night, this song comes on and I remember that first time I played his music. I recalled how excited I was to possibly see him play live. I started searching for touring dates but I was too late. He had passed away three months prior to my search and all I could do is listen to Grace on repeat.

Music & Lyrics: Soil, Soil

My relationship with Tegan and Sara began six years ago. I must have read about them in a magazine and I'm sure the article started with "Twins. Canadian. Gay" as that seemed to be the norm for writing a review about them. I didn't immediately rush to my local music store to buy their music, rather, I went through a few fan reviews of their live shows. Their first two albums were a bit hard to get so I just listened to live bootlegs of their shows. They seemed funny enough but I was really trying to stay away from folk-ish pop music. They released If It was You and I got confused. Were they the same girls that sung "Proud" and "My Number?" The new album was catchy enough. They dropped their accoustic guitars and had a much louder and fresher sound. I still had a hard time figuring out who was singing what song. All along I kept asking myself, would I have listened to them if they were not gay? Their first albums didn't make much of an impression but I went back. The same goes for The Indigo Girls (hey, don't groan), would I have had my mini obsession many many years ago if they were not women loving women? When my 10th grade teacher played their music in my Lit class, besides their great harmonies, I thought they were just another band.

With Tegan and Sara's new album, I didn't immediately love it. I'm not sure what I was looking for but when I listened to "I Was Married" I cringed a little. I had gotten so used to their So Jealous sound that almost shunned the new album altogether. The Con was a grower album for sure. Sara's songs are so layered that I end up picking new musical phrases each time I listen to her songs on my new headphones. And Tegan's in your face songs are surprisingly relatable which is why I chose "Soil, Soil" as my Music & Lyrics pick this week. It's short, honest, genuine and gets to the point.

docu sunday: the real toronto dvd

There's a documentary that's been floating around for two years about the real Toronto called The Real Toronto DVD (ha!), which I had a chance to watched last weekend. The 60-minute film focuses on the urban neighborhoods and housing projects of Toronto (aka T.O, T-Dot). Madd Russian, the then twenty-two year old director, grabbed his camera and went to nine neighborhoods in Toronto asking the basic question, "What was it like growing up here?"

The first few minutes of the film you're thinking this might be an interesting look at Toronto's subculture but after 20 minutes it becomes apparent that you're just watching young men talk about a lot of, well, shit, "I'll show you ***ies what happens when you come to my hood." The most disturbing part of this film is when we get to the Jane & Finch neighborhood. There's a scene in an apartment building hallway where about a dozen young men gather around brandishing their guns, coaxing their would be watchers to come down to their neighborhood and the consequences that will follow if they do.

There is a fast warning at the beginning of the film where it states that the film does not "glamorize violence... its purpose is to bring awareness on some issues that people in certain ares of Toronto have to deal with every day." Had Madd Russian actually presented different questions to his subjects, there might have been some substance and not a myriad of disillusioned and angry young men repeating how real life is in T.O. over again. Basically good idea gone bad. The documentary is not for the faint of heart due to graphic gun play but if you feel the need to view this film, it's available on google video. Just type in "the real toronto full."

can i talk about sam cooke for a moment? can i talk about how incredible his music makes me feel or how i crank up the volume so loud whenever his music comes on?

he's one of those rare vocalists that, i believe, can never be replicated. his delivery when he sings is like no other (second best is otis redding but i'll get to him another time). from the first words sung by cooke on "Nothing Can Change This Love," you know that you are about to embark on a sweet musical journey. i know of two other artist who has covered this song but no one can do it justice like the original. while he shares the title of soul music innovator with ray charles, little richard, and james "mr. dynamite " brown , the posthumous release of "A Change Is Gonna Come" was an indication of the direction he might have taken had he not been in that hotel room that night. nevertheless, he left a superb catalog of compositions where someone like me can gush about.

remember when you were a little kid and you would be so excited about the little things. i have clear memories of the time i misplaced my toothbrush when i was six. i had no idea where i had misplaced it or who might have been playing a prank on me. we never left our toothbrush in the bathroom. i confessed this to my mom a little later in the day. she gave me an ultimatum: find your toothbrush or else - that of course became the beginning of our wonderful mother-daughter dynamic. what would you do in that situation beside ransacking your room? i started praying and making promises of being a good kid and all that stuff. my mom would periodically checked on my progress. when i had moved to another room for my search she directed her cold stare at my direction. hours later, i found it next to my bed. i was sure i checked that area four times. i was positive i had some sort of connection with someone up there. as i look back at that situation, it could have been my smart ass sister who wanted to see me sweat it out for a few hours. maybe i pissed her off about something. i questioned her about it recently but she can't remember past the age of ten. i experienced something similar again and i felt like i was on cloud nine. i am at a point where pretentiousness is left at the front door. i find that it is extremely hard to avoid such things given the industry i chose to be in, however, it is only momentarily. there are other things, more important things, that are worth arguing about rather than how someone fucked your cappuccino order this morning and how your day has gone downhill because of that small infraction.

8. i used to be a recreational cigarette smoker and have luckily put that nasty habit of mine behind me.

6. jonathan safran foer has been put on the back burner, at least for this weekend, so i can finish some graphic novels. upon a recommendation, i quickly devoured Marjane Satrapi's graphic novels Persepolis and Persepolis 2, and then i immersed myself with Blankets by Craig Thompson, which was quite enjoyable and heartfelt. while i'm vacationing, David B.'s Epileptic will keep me company. if i can only get the image of Borat out of my head i would have finished JSF's book by now.

7. i am not enjoying this year's so you think you can dance cast as much as season 2.

8. coming home and seeing rhett miller on my tv screen made me happy this week.

9. while visiting sparky's blog, i found out about rilo kiley's upcoming album. EXCITED!!! i think sparks may be a bit more excited about JL and RK than me though. seriously.

10. my urkel moment of the week involved a chair and a bruised lip. don't ask.

it's friday night and i'm going to get cozy with a book. have i told you about the time where on one summer day i watched C-SPANs coverage of the Book Expo? i spent the whole day watching interviews and jotting down all the names of all the books to read on a future date. this year i'm starting with two books for june, and if time permits, these may or may not carry over to july.

1. Everything is Illuminated - Johnathan Safran Foer
2. Second Harvest - Jean Giono

i'm thinking of reading The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini and Haruki Murakami's new book, After Dark, for july. in between these I've been lazily reading books on Nirvana and Joe Strummer. if you have a suggestion on what i should add to my list for next month let me know.

on a whim, i decided to start a blog, a podcast, and a radio show. it grew into something that was exciting and fun. i shared a bit about myself to you and all was receptive. now one year and one day later, i reflect on how great that year had been. such a ride. i'm not sure how this year will take form. at times things will be fairly quiet on this blog, lyrics will replace some of my thoughts, there might be a new cast or a radio show, some photography of my latest adventures and perhaps a drawing if i'm in the mood but it will still very much have that pbwolf touch. to all of you who've read, listened and posted comments, thank you.

the namesake

i was elated when i found out one of my favorite books would be made into a feature film. having been a fan of the author, jhumpa lahiri, since the Interperter of Malidies, i purchased The Namesake right away. the book is an intimate portrail of a bengali family as they balance new and old world traditions in america.

the trailer seems to stay true to the book. unlike the mess of a movie that was Running With Scissors. i did try to watch that twice, but resolved to giving up. if there were dvd extras or easter eggs, i did not care to find out.

mira nair is the director of the namesake. you may know of her past works such as Vanity Fair (highly recommended), Monsoon Wedding and Salaam Bombay! i haven't seen the namesake advertised that much but if it is playing in your town, it'll be something interesting to see besides that roadhog movie with tim allen and john travolta.

My guilty pleasure...Tater Tots

I was probably nine when I was first served tater tots courtesy of my elementary school. I tried it on a whim. These perfect little golden nuggets were the best pick me up. Though I must admit, some days it tasted like poo. At first I blamed the lunch ladies as it would obviously be their fault why my ultimate lunch item would taste like poo. The next time it came up on our menu, I decided to take just a handful hoping I had just gotten a bad batch of tots so that's why they tasted so bad. I saved it for last covering it with gobs of ketchup. Alas, no more poo taste. Maybe the lunch lady was scared of the evil eye I gave her last time. Nonetheless, they tasted great!

At some point they stopped serving tater tots. I tried to make them at home but no such luck. Those home economics classes did not pay off. All I learned to do was to add milk to my eggs to make it fluffy while watching Martina Hingis play at Wimbledon.

A few years pass and I'm attending this little social event where we are saying bon voyage to our favorite extrovert. We open the menu and guess what they had?! My shear enjoyment was stifled in my beer glass. The other people with me were also excited that it was on the menu. Have you ever tasted tater tots dipped in baba ganoush?

It's fantastic.

I hear that the tater tot hotdish is popular in the upper Midwest area. I found a few recipes that I should attempt this weekend. My Home-Ec skills have surpassed expectations.

He past away three years and two days ago.

Sitting at my desk at work three years ago, I got a call from a friend just as I'm reading news of his death. We are both in shock and searched through various news/music sites to confirm. It's true. He's dead.

I talked about not getting a chance to see him perform and then I started to tear up. So did my friend. We reminisced about when we first heard his music. What we were doing and how it affected us. After 20 minutes, I hang up and continue to work.

It was a long day.

Today is NES day!

Well, it should be. The new Nintendo Wii is coming out soon but I gotta say I rather have my old Nintendo system in front of me. For the life of me I can't recall what I did with it. Anyway, I'm just feeling a bit nostalgic today.

I found two replacements to cure my NES cravings. vNES & EverydayGame has a wide variety of NES and Sega games. I've already played 20 games on the vNES site. I still suck at Ice Hockey.

Someone sent the question below a few weeks ago and I thought I might as well post it here since Men-in-Skirts has been traumatic for some of you.

You may have notices that I haven't posted a new SJR on Wednesday. I'm really busy at the moment and am spending most of my time being a nerd learning how to code this and that. I think the best part out of all of this coding business is when I finally figure this stuff out; I'll have a celebratory drink (I'm having one now). New SJR will be in the next two weeks. I'm also planning a spectacular party to take place in September. I get to wear a fancy dress. Last time I wore a fancy dress I was at a friends wedding many years ago.

Sizzurp

The original formula:

Promethazine w/Codeine syrup
Any fruit flavored soda
A jolly rancher

Put it all in a Styrofoam cup and enjoy. The codeine is mainly responsible for the euphoria felt after drinking sizzurp. Promethazine causes motor skill impairment, lethargy, and extreme drowsiness. If it doesn't have promethazine, it ain't real sizzurp.

DXM is not a component of sizzurp, although it may produce vaguely similar effects to the above recipe in doses ranging from 150 - 250 mg.

I drank a deuce (2 oz.) of sizzurp and got straight folded. (A PBWolf Reenactment)

You may ask yourself why the above has to do with the (late - apologies) radio show for this week. Well, I included a cover of Through The Wire in this show and needed a Kanye West image but for some strange reason I decided to look up 'sizzurp' instead. I had no idea they made this stuff. Exhibit B - The Wheel of ~~Wonder~~Death. This ride seems like it's tame but it's NOT. My life flashed before my eyes. Maybe because that ride is soooo old. I feared some screws would come loose and send five 20-somethings into the crowd below.
