Music & Lyrics: Nothing Can Change This Love   Saturday, August 25, 2007       musical chimes

can i talk about sam cooke for a moment? can i talk about how incredible his music makes me feel or how i crank up the volume so loud whenever his music comes on?

he's one of those rare vocalists that, i believe, can never be replicated. his delivery when he sings is like no other (second best is otis redding but i'll get to him another time). from the first words sung by cooke on "Nothing Can Change This Love," you know that you are about to embark on a sweet musical journey. i know of two other artist who has covered this song but no one can do it justice like the original. while he shares the title of soul music innovator with ray charles, little richard, and james "mr. dynamite " brown , the posthumous release of "A Change Is Gonna Come" was an indication of the direction he might have taken had he not been in that hotel room that night. nevertheless, he left a superb catalog of compositions where someone like me can gush about.

i've started a new format where i'll include this little flash player and the lyrics at the end. click on the name of the song for more options.

If I go
A million miles away
I write a letter each and every day
'Cause honey, nothin',
Nothin' can ever change this love
I have for you

Ooh, make me weep,
You can make me cry
See me comin'
And you can pass me by
But honey, nothin',
nothin' can ever change this love
I have for you

Ooh, you're the apple of my eye
You're cherrie pie
And oh you're cake and ice cream
You're sugar and spice
And everything nice
You're the girl of my, my, my dreams

But if you wanted to leave me
And roam
When you got back
I'd just say
Welcome home,
'Cause honey, nothin',
Nothin' nothin' can ever change this love
I have for you

I know that nothin',
Nothin' can ever change the love
I have for you

One Line   Monday, August 20, 2007       musical chimes

One Line
PJ Harvey

Do you remember the first kiss?
Star shooting across the sky
To come to such a place as this
You never left my mind

I'm watching from the wall
As, in the streets, we fight
This world all gone to war
All I need is you tonight

And I draw a line
To your heart today
To your heart from mine
A line to keep us safe

All through the rising sun
All through the circling years
You were the only one
Who could have brought me here

And I draw a line
To your heart today
To your heart from mine
One line to keep us safe

And I draw a line
To your heart today
To your heart from mine
And pray to keep us safe

Watch the stars now moving
'Cross the sky
Keep this feeling
Safe tonight

tv show
martha wainwright

I'm not such a good lover
I'm a better talker
So when you touch me there
I'm scared that you'll see
Not the way that I don't love you
But the way that I don't love myself

And there are things these days
That can help you through a phase
Like food & health and fear
I prefer the beer
Not the way that I don't love you
But the way that I hate myself

Oh when the cityscape is born
From the ocean floor
It speaks its native tongue
Physical, subliminal
Not the way that it left you cold
But the way that you left yourself

When the Moon falls from the Earth
When the Sun, it fills its girth
And I know we'll go howl at the night
But still the sun will not hide our fight

Oh, I laugh a lot
But that's just a plot
I found a way to make the night stay
Not the way that I don't love you
But the way that I hate myself

It was Oprah
On the TV show
She told me so

It was Oprah
On the TV show
She told me so

Ah, it was Oprah
On the TV show
She told me so

Not the way that I don't love you
But the way that I love myself

SJR13 - The Third Harvest   Monday, August 13, 2007       musical chimes

Download via Megaupload: SJR No. 13 - The Third Harvest

or you can listen to the cast via DivShare

Shownotes:

Here's a few notes on some of the music covered on this show. I talked over "Brodekin" -- my thinly veiled attempt at making dance music.

------
Nicole Atkins - New album, Neptune City, is out tomorrow and will be available via iTunes.
[official] [myspace]

The Avett Brothers - Brothers Seth and Scott Avett joined by Bob Crawford makes foot-stomping music from North Carolina. Their latest album, Emotionalism, was released in May.
[official] [myspace]

Meg Baird - Find out about about Meg and her solo album, Dear Companion, by going to the links below.
[official] [myspace]

Great Lake Swimmers - Singer/Songwritter Tony Dekker released his album, Ongiara, early this year. See GLS this fall as they stop by your town.
[official] [myspace]

M. Ward - There's not enough things to say about this man. I strongly suggest listening to M. Ward's entire discography.
[official] [myspace]

Basia Bulat - It was her cover of "Someday" by The Strokes that caught my attention. Then I was hooked by her music from her debut release of Oh, My Darling. She also bears a resemblance to Michelle Williams of Dawson's Creek. Basia will be touring with Final Fantasy this fall.
[official] [myspace]

Mike Andrews - You may know if him from his work on the soundtrack of Donnie Darko and Me You and Everyone We Know. Mike Andrews has a solo project, Hand On String, filled with quiet and intimate songs.
[official]

Dana Falconberry - Caught off guard. That's exactly how I felt after listening to Dana Falconberry's six song EP, Paper Sailboat, for the first time. It was gorgeous music and I found myself playing her songs again and again. While I anticipate her next album, you can find out more about Dana from her official site and myspace page.
[official] [myspace]

Mirah and Spectratone International - Is there anything this woman can't do? Thank goodness for a new album. I've worn out the grooves of all my Mirah records. This time around, Mirah Yom Tov Zeitlan is joined by Lori Goldston and Kyle Hanson of Spectratone International on Share This Place. I've never considered liking an album about bugs but with Mirah's touch, I couldn't help myself. Mirah will be performing on 8/22 in Los Angeles at The Hayworth Theater for Radio8Ball Show.
[official]

Peter and the Wolf - Red Hunter is joined by a rotating cast of friends (including Dana Falconberry) on the album The Lightness. Find out if they coming to your town.

rider on the wheel   Tuesday, August 07, 2007       musical chimes

remember when you were a little kid and you would be so excited about the little things. i have clear memories of the time i misplaced my toothbrush when i was six. i had no idea where i had misplaced it or who might have been playing a prank on me. we never left our toothbrush in the bathroom. i confessed this to my mom a little later in the day. she gave me an ultimatum: find your toothbrush or else - that of course became the beginning of our wonderful mother-daughter dynamic. what would you do in that situation beside ransacking your room? i started praying and making promises of being a good kid and all that stuff. my mom would periodically checked on my progress. when i had moved to another room for my search she directed her cold stare at my direction. hours later, i found it next to my bed. i was sure i checked that area four times. i was positive i had some sort of connection with someone up there. as i look back at that situation, it could have been my smart ass sister who wanted to see me sweat it out for a few hours. maybe i pissed her off about something. i questioned her about it recently but she can't remember past the age of ten. i experienced something similar again and i felt like i was on cloud nine. i am at a point where pretentiousness is left at the front door. i find that it is extremely hard to avoid such things given the industry i chose to be in, however, it is only momentarily. there are other things, more important things, that are worth arguing about rather than how someone fucked your cappuccino order this morning and how your day has gone downhill because of that small infraction.

--------------------------

somehow i've been tagged by two people to post 8 random facts about me.

We have to post these rules before we give you the facts.
Players start with eight random facts/habits about themselves.
People who are tagged need to write their own blog about their eight things and post these rules.
At the end of your blog, you need to choose eight people to get tagged and list their names.
Don't forget to leave them a comment telling them they're tagged, and to read your blog.

1. on my left hand, my ring finger is slightly longer than my index finger and on my right hand both index and ring finger are equal.

2. i am very stubborn.

3. i'm highly accident-proned. i've suffered one concussion and various near death experiences. bungee jumping and parasailing are on the list of adventure-type activities i won't be accomplishing in my lifetime.

4. i owned two cats and a parrot when i was young and now i can't barely babysit a puppy.

5. i have aspirations of owning a bakery when i'm 50.

6. i recently realized that i'm slightly claustrophobic.

7. i am not a fan of authority and even more so ignorance. i don't mean to say that i'm reckless and would purposely do something wrong because i dislike authority, i'm just not a fan. with ignorance, that is something that i cannot tolerate.

8. i used to be a recreational cigarette smoker and have luckily put that nasty habit of mine behind me.

i don't know who's left to be tagged, so i'll just stop it with me.

lose my head   Thursday, August 02, 2007       musical chimes

sending out my thoughts to those affected by the minnesota bridge collapse.

-----------------------
lose my head
damien jurado

I won't pretend not to see you looking
I smile and walk the other way

Kept alive in pictures
Still shots of you sleeping
And I play the movies in my mind

If I ever lose my head
Don't ever let me lose my head

High above me far from all who see you
You play the hero in my song

This is my blue one
That one makes me happy
Call in another round of cheer

If I ever lose my head
Don't ever let me lose my head
